THE BEACHES OF THE MARAÚ PENINSULA

The longest beaches are located on the ocean side of the Peninsula. With strong waves, good for surfing, they have white sand and coral reefs which form natural swimming pools at low tide. On the other side of the Peninsula, facing the Camamu Bay, beaches are smaller, with calm and not very deep water.

BARRA GRANDE

In front of the bay, the beach of Barra Grande is almost two kilometers long, with clear sand and calm water, good for children. Barra Grande is the main entrance to the Peninsula for the visitors who come by boat from Camamu. There are many houses and pousadas (lodges). The main bars and restaurants of the Peninsula are found there.

PONTA DO MUTÁ

From Barra Grande, a short walk by the beach takes you to Ponta do Mutá, which is the northest point of the Peninsula, facing the ocean. There are beautiful rocks that arise above-water. A lighthouse marks the entrance of the bay where a Portuguese fort existed in the past. There are some pousadas here.

TRÊS COQUEIROS - BOMBAÇA

It is the beginning of a succession of very long and continuous beaches that go to Itacaré, which is 50km to the south. Waves are stronger there than on the bay and sand is thicker and whiter. Coral reefs appear with low tide. There are some houses and lodges on the beach of Bombaça.

TAIPU DE FORA

Taipu de Fora is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. The great attraction is a huge natural swimming pool surrounded by corals with rich submarine fauna. It is an excellent place for snorkel diving. Some of the best lodges of the Peninsula are located here. On the beach, bars and restaurants sell drinks, seafood and other typical dishes from Bahia.

CASSANGE

With some waves and many coconut palms, Cassange has sand softer than the other beaches. Not far from there is the Cassange Lagoon. With unsalted water, it is separated from the ocean by a 300m-wide sand band. The lagoon is a good place for swiming and water-skiing. There are some pousadas on the beach. Next to the lagoon, there is a hill called "Morro do Celular" which provides a beautiful panoramic sight of the Peninsula.

SAQUAÍRA

The beach of Saquaíra is very long and almost deserted. There are miles of coconut palms, white sand and small waves. Saquaíra was a fishermen village that recently grew with the construction of new houses. A bus connects daily Saquaíra to Ubaítaba, a small town located on the BR-101 interstate road.

ARANDI / ALGODÕES

Going south, there are more deserted beaches with plantations of coconuts and fine white sand. At Arandi beach, the low tide forms natural swimming pools between the reefs. At Algodões beach, there are some houses and lodges. Those beaches are the closest to the village of Maraú.

AIBIM, PIRAGANGA, PONTAL AND THE BEACHES OF ITACARÉ

Piracanga is the last beach of the Maraú county. The territory of Itacaré begins at the south of the Piracanga river. There waves are much stronger. Pontal is one of the best beaches for surfing.
In Itacaré the coast is completely different, with small creeks, hills and rainforest.
Visit the guide of beaches of Itacaré.

THE CAMAMU BAY

There are many islands in the Camamu Bay. Some of them, like Ilha da Pedra Furada, Ilha Grande, Campinho, Sapinho and Ilha do Goió, have good beaches for swimming and diving. The bay hides beautiful landscapes, mangrove, forest and other treasures that have to be discovered by boat.
